Place #1: Kalam Valley
Kalam sits where the Ushu and Utror rivers meet at roughly 2,000 m, The bazaar has hotels, jeep stands, and honey shops. Best for: overnight base, river walks, fixing transport to Mahodand. Stay: 2 nights if doing Mahodand. Drive from Mingora: 4-5 hours (100 km after Bahrain).
Place #2: Mahodand Lake
Glacial lake at 2,865 m, about 35 km from Kalam by jeep. Boating and trout stalls in season. Best for: alpine scenery, photography, half-day adventure. Stay: day trip only. Access: May to November; jeep costs about PKR 6,000 to 8,000 return.
Places #3-5: Bahrain, Malam Jabba, Miandam
Bahrain. Two rivers meet here. Trout restaurants, handicraft shops. Good break between Mingora and Kalam. Malam Jabba. Ski resort at 2,600 m. Chairlift, zip line, snow Dec to Feb. Miandam. Pine hillside town, 30 min from Mingora. Quieter than Malam Jabba for snow play.
Places #6-10: Culture and extras
White Palace Marghazar. Royal summer home, marble building, garden walks. Mingora. Swat Museum, Green Chowk bazaar, last ATM before upper valley. Ushu Forest. Cedar forest on Mahodand jeep track. Kundol Lake. Harder jeep track from Utror, fewer crowds than Mahodand. Butkara stupa is a good choice because 2,000-year-old Buddhist ruins, 15 min from Mingora.
Skip these on a first trip
Remote trek lakes (Daral, Spin Khwar, Izmis) unless you hike regularly and hire guides. Gabral and Shahi Bagh unless you have a local contact and 2 extra days. First visit formula: kalam + Mahodand + one middle valley stop (Bahrain or Malam Jabba).

When is Mahodand road closed?+
