Famous Lakes in Swat: Mahodand, Kundol, Daral and More

A guide to the beautiful alpine lakes of Swat, how to reach each one, the effort involved, and the best season to see them at their finest.

A valley of alpine lakes

Swat is famous for its glacial lakes, set high among forests and snow peaks. Some are reached easily by jeep, while others reward a proper trek with solitude and crystal-clear water. All are seasonal, accessible roughly late spring through autumn once the winter snow clears from the high routes.

Mahodand Lake

Mahodand is the most accessible and popular, reached by a 4x4 jeep track from Kalam through Ushu Forest, about 35 km taking 90 to 120 minutes each way. Surrounded by pine forest and peaks, it offers boating, horse rides, meadows and tea stalls, making it ideal for families and casual visitors who want alpine beauty without a hard hike.

Kundol Lake

Kundol, above Utror Valley, is a trekking destination reached on foot or partly by jeep and then a walk. Quiet and clear, it rewards those willing to make the effort with a pristine alpine setting. It is a step up in difficulty from Mahodand and best suited to reasonably fit travelers with time to spare.

Daral Lake

Daral is reached by a hike from Bahrain through rich forest into an alpine bowl. The trek takes several hours and requires decent fitness, but the payoff is a beautiful, less-crowded lake. A local guide is recommended, and it is best done as a full-day outing with an early start.

Other lakes worth knowing

The valley holds more gems, including Saifullah, Izmis and Pearl lakes and the Kandol area, most requiring treks of varying difficulty. These reward experienced trekkers seeking quieter, wilder scenery. For any of these, check current conditions, go with a guide, and plan around the short open season.

Planning a lake trip

stay in Kalam for Mahodand and the upper lakes, or Bahrain for Daral. Go early in the day, carry water, snacks, a warm layer and grippy shoes, and confirm jeep or guide costs in advance. For treks, tell someone your plan, since signal disappears, and never attempt routes beyond your fitness or the day light available.
